Aishwarya Rai’s peace message at the UN: Om Shanti!

Aishwarya Rai’s peace message at the UN: Om Shanti! On the International Day of Peace on September 21, Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai had a message of peace and unity to give at the UN headquarters in New York.

At the UN’s annual ceremony to commemorate the International Day of Peace, Aishwarya Rai shared the dais with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and UN Messengers of Peace -- Hollywood actor Michael Douglas and American actress and singer Monique Coleman, among others.

Aishwarya later shared her views on peace and harmony in a panel discussion attended by students from across the US. The theme of the discussion was "Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future", and Ash had a lot to say.

The 38-year-old actress told the students that they should rise above their petty egos and harbor peace within their hearts.

“It is about we and us, and not I…We need to cut out our wants, desires, basic ambition to try and override each other and expand power. Only then we will be able to find our peace,” Ash said to the gathering of students and members of civil society.

Beginning her association with the UN, Aishwarya Rai said the experience is going to be a learning curve for her.

“This experience, my journey beginning today with the United Nations is quite a learning curve for me…I am a great believer in the UN because uniting for a better world is what we all are very passionate about here. Unity takes courage, commitment and leadership,” she said.

Aishwarya concluded her address with the Sanskrit shloka “Om Shanti” stressing that peace is not just a word but a “divine manifestation which we have to give birth to within ourselves”.

The Bollywood actress has flown to the US to take part in the UN function and has more meetings lined up this week. Her husband Abhishek Bachchan is also in the US, shooting for the film Dhoom 3 in Chicago. Ash’s daughter Aaradhya also flew to the US with her.
