Box Office Report: ‘Patiala House’s bad response still on the way!: After a slow start on Friday, Nikhil Advani’s new movie Patiala House couldn’t pick up on the weekend. As per reports, the movie collected Rs 2.75 crore approx on Monday. The film has witnessed a drop of 40-45% in its collection since Friday, and it’s been just four days.

If the movie continues to remain steady at BO, it can manage to get close to Rs 25 crore mark in its first week. But this is not a good figure for any Akshay Kumar film because most of his movies get much more than Rs 25 crore approx in their first weekend.

It’s certain that the movie is not going to be a big hit but because of its not-so-high budget, the producers can heave a sigh of relief. They are also benefitted by Akshay’s profit sharing deal and also with the rebate given by the UK government for films shot in the country.

The collections of Yeh Saali Zindagi in its second weekend were average. The film has managed to hold on at theatres in spite of the release of Patiala House. The movie is likely to do a share of around Rs 5.75 crore in its lifetime run.

This Friday, Priyanka Chopra is ready to jolt the BO with her 7 Khoon Maaf.

Box Office Report: 'Patiala House' opens with poor response: Akshay Kumar’s latest film Patiala House has opened to an unexpectedly poor response at the box office.

Luck seems to have run out on Akshay Kumar, for after the failure of his Tees Maar Khan, his new release Patiala House too wasn’t able to attract many footfalls in theatres on its opening day, Friday.

The film opened to 30 to 40 percent response in multiplexes, and a dismal 10 to 20 percent occupancy at single screen theatres. This is shockingly low for a superstar whose films used to open to packed houses just two years back. The reviews by critics are mixed and so is the audience reaction to the Nikhil Advani-directed film.

Meanwhile, last week’s release Yeh Saali Zindagi rounded off its first week with a collection of Rs. 7.5 crore net. On the other hand, Madhur Bhandarkar’s Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji continued to slide down and did a business of Rs. 6 crore during its second week. The film’s collection so far is in the proximity of Rs. 27 crore.

The coming Friday would see the release of Vishal Bhardwaj’s much awaited film 7 Khoon Maaf.

'Patiala House' Movie Review: From 'Kal Ho Na Ho' to this Kahlon saga about baap-beta stand-offs, director Nikhil Advani has remained an undeviating votary of melodrama. With dogged determination, he has followed the one-point formula through one hit and two massive flops in his career: piping in as much melodrama and tear-jerking moments quintessential to the Hindi cinema genre that’s been dying for years but is yet not fully dead. Patiala House, in that sense, is another salaam-e-kitsch by the director who refuses to throw in the towel or change course despite two rude awakenings from the box office.

Times change, people don’t. That’s precisely also the case with Gurtej Singh Kahlon (Rishi Kapoor) -- a proud Sikh in Southall, London -- who has nurtured a visceral hatred for the goras ever since a fatal racist attack on his late mentor (Prem Chopra) two decades ago. Over the years he has grown (rather degenerated) into an autocratic figure whose diktat is the final word in the household called Patiala House, bustling with daughters, ghar-jamais, cousins and a sheepish, servile beta Pargat (Akshay Kumar) who toe the line etched by their bigoted bauji.

Everyone has had to sacrifice some dream. Someone wanted to be a rapper, but is now doing kirtans; someone wanted to be a chef but is making jalebis; someone wanted to be a film-maker but is a cabbie. Most of all, Pargat has smothered his dream of being a pace bowler for England and is now content with an utterly boring and humdrum existence as the keeper of a provision store in Southall. All because of the gora-hating, venom-spewing, domineering bauji.

But then, a young girl Simran (Anushka Sharma) with a questionable reputation prods and dares Pargat to realize his dream and play for the English team against the wishes of his father.

For most of its running time, Patiala House keeps zigzagging between melodrama and light humour. One moment, Advani wants you to yank out your kerchiefs to dry the moistened eyes, the next he tries to regale you with the antics of the Punjabi brood with its bunch of wannabes. That’s the course the film charts for the first half before slipping into a somewhat silly zone in the second half, as the odds and sods of the Patiala House literally run from pillar to post to keep the truth hidden from bauji.

Patiala House's premiere will be held at Patiala: Thanks to the efforts of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, director Nikhil Advani’s film Patiala House, starring Akshay Kumar in lead role, will premiere in the Punjabi city from which it derives its title.

The film’s London and Mumbai premieres have reportedly been cancelled because Mr. Badal asked the film to be premiered in Patiala.

Confirming the development, Tinku Singh, Managing Director of SRS cinema in Patiala told a news agency that the producers have asked them to make arrangements for the premiere show of 'Patiala House' on February 10.

“We are honoured to be holding the premiere of Patiala House in one of our cinemas,” said Singh.

The film's cast Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Akshay, Anushka Sharma along with Nikhil Advani will be flying down to Patiala on Thursday, he said.

Releasing on February 11, the film is a family drama that revolves around a London-based second generation Sikh's dream to play cricket.
Junior Akshay to act as Akshay's teenage version in Patiala House: There was no way director Nikhil Advani was going to compromise on casting for the boy who would play Bollywood star Akshay Kumar's teenage version in his upcoming film "Patiala House". He found the perfect junior Akshay in Usman Quereshi.

Advani was hunting for a boy to play 17-year-old Akshay, and Usman was on board on the first meeting itself because of his resemblance with the 43-year-old actor. In fact, the resemblance was so strong that the crew gave him the nickname Akki Junior, said a source.

"We were completely bowled over by the striking resemblance between the two - Akshay and Usman. And after the screen test, without a doubt we found our 17-year-old Akshay for 'Patiala House'. It is not easy to play a younger role of such a superstar but Usman has done a great job," said Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, the co-producer of the movie.

In fact, Akshay was quite surprised and excited to see Usman, and discovered that they shared a similar scar on their eyebrow. Akshay also said that Usman's body structure is quite similar to his own when he was 17.

"Patiala House" will release Feb 11, 2011.
