A R Rahman meets Randy Newman: At the 83rd Academy Awards held on Sunday night in the US, A R Rahman lost out in the Best Song category to the American composer Randy Newman.
Many in India believe A R Rahman deserved the Oscar for this hauntingly melodious ‘If I Rise’ from 127 Hours, even though Randy Newman bagged the golden man for ‘We Belong Together’ from Toy Story 3.

But there was no resentment on the part of Rahman who had beforehand stated that he did not hope to win this year. Rahman was also nominated for Best Original Score but lost out to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from ‘The Social Network’.

Very sportingly, Rahman bonded with Newman at the show and later even posted a pic of him with the American composer on this Twitter page.

“With Randy Newman, who won the Oscar for Toy Story 3,” Rahman wrote and posted the pic below.

That’s being a sport.
A R Rahman loses Oscar Award: Two-time Oscar winning Indian composer A R Rahman failed to bag the coveted Golden Man at the 83rd Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.

The composer was nominated in two categories: Best Original Score and Best Song (If I Rise) for his work in Danny Boyle’s film 127 Hours. But Rahman missed out on winning in both the categories.

He lost in the Best Original Score category to Trent Rezner and Atticus Ross for their compositions in The Social Network. Rahman lost in the Best Song category to Randy Newman for his song ‘We Belong Together’ in Toy Story 3.

Rahman, however, gave a moving performance on stage along with Dido. The two sang a teaser of their song ‘If I Rise’.

All in all, the Oscars this year did not rock, partly because of strictly average hosting by a shockingly stilted James Franco and somewhat amusing Anne Hathaway. The evening also had its Oops moment when actress Melissa Leo uttered the ‘F’ word in her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress for ‘The Fighter’.
A R Rahman's live performance at Oscars: A R Rahman, India’s pride at the Oscars this year as well, will give a live performance at the 83rd Academy Awards at Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles on Feb 27 (US Time).

Rahman, who has two nominations (Best Original Score and Best Song) for his work in Danny Boyle’s film 127 Hours will perform live the song ‘If I Rise’ along with Florence Welch. The song has already won praise from critics for its melancholic melody.

The big night would also see actress Gwyneth Paltrow performing the song ‘Coming Home’ from the film ‘Country Strong’.

Randy Newman will perform his nominated song “We Belong Together” from the animated film “Toy Story 3.”

Alan Menken, who is nominated for writing the music for “I See the Light” from the animated film ‘Tangled’, will accompany singers Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi on the piano.

A R Rahman bagged two more Oscar nominations for 127 Hours: A R Rahman has bagged two Oscar nominations for his work on the film 127 Hours. Rahman is nominated in two categories, best original score for 127 hours and for the best original song for If I Rise.

The nominations for the 83rd Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday. The King’s Speech is the leading contender at this year’s Academy Awards with 12 nominations including nominations for best picture and acting honours for Colin Firth, Helena Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush.

Rahman’s last visit to the Oscars for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionare landed him two Oscars, we hope that the winning team weaves their magic once again.

Directed by Danny Boyle 127 Hours is the true story of mountain climber Aron Ralston's remarkable adventure to save himself after a fallen boulder crashes on his arm and traps him in an isolated canyon in Utah. 127 Hours has received 6 nods, including the nomination for best picture and a best actor nomination for James Franco.

Oscar winner A R Rahman lose Golden Globe Award!: Indian music composer and twin Oscar winner A R Rahman could not win the coveted globe at the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday night.

Rahman was nominated in the Original Score category for his music in director Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours but lost to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, composers of the music in blockbuster The Social Network.

Hopes for Rahman were quite high because just a day earlier he had won the best original song trophy at the 16th Critics’ Choice Awards for his number ‘If I Rise’ from the same film.

Rahman had won his first and only Golden Globe award in 2009 for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. Later that year, he won two Oscars (Best Original Score and Best Song) for his work in Slumdog.

Now, Rahman’s hopes are pinned on Oscars which will be held at the end of February. He’s nominated for his song ‘If I Rise’.
A R Rahman turns 44 today, 'Happy Birthday': India’s twin Oscar winning musical genius A R Rahman turns 44 today.

On his birthday, what Rahman is most excited about is not partying but - quite expectedly - work. Yes, the workhorse, who loves to compose music at night, tweeted: “I am very excited about 127 Hours releasing in the UK today and what makes it even more special is that we scored the music here, in London”.

The other reason he’s excited is that he has been nominated for Golden Globe Awards in the Best Original Score category for his music in Danny Boyle’s ‘127 Hours’.

He’s also in the race for an Oscar nomination for his composition ‘If I Rise’ from the same movie.

It’s been 18 years since Rahman first wowed us with his compositions. Like wine, he’s only gotten better with age. Yes, he was criticized for his CWG theme song, which people who were expecting something on the lines of Waka Waka found to be lacking in energy, without themselves having an ear to accept something new. Rahman answered the critics in the best way he can: by a stunning performance at the CWG opening.

Now, the super talented composer is taking up international projects as well, so obviously he’ll be composing selectively for Bollywood and South.

We at ApunKaChoice wish him a Happy Birthday. May he win the Golden Globe and another Oscar this year.
